It was only three years ago yesterday when the tragic death of Andre Hicks AKA Mac Dre happened. He was murdered after performing a show in Kansas City. One month earlier, I saw him perform in the Tenderloin. There were only about forty people there, most of them on stage rapping. Andre took the mic around 2:00 in the morning, promptly after last call. I watched him perform Get Stupid and a couple of other tracks and when the show was over I approached him and slapped him a high five. It was just less than one month later that he was taken from us, catapulting his career into a posthumous golden age. He continues to shine as an icon of rap music and his talent is a positive influence to all independent bay area musicians. If only he were still here with us, composing music for us all.
